New Jersey / Pennsylvania wedding photojournalism

George Washington never crossed the Delaware River four times in one day, but we did for this wedding!
Melissa and Bryan dressed in Pennsylvania, the ceremony was held at Sacred Heart Church in Riverton, New Jersey and the reception was at the lovely BelleVoir Manor in Bensalem, PA.

Morris County wedding photographs

Erin and Greg’s Morris County wedding provided lots of great light and color (both natural and man-made).
The vibrant red barn at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the sunset at the Hamilton Park Hotel made great backdrops.

Housewives of New Jersey photo shoot

The Brownstone in Paterson was the scene and the cast was members of the Housewives of New Jersey television show.

The photo shoot for the cover and inside pages of Inside Jersey magazine was a real team effort, and the team was huge.
A dozen of the Housewives and family members, a dozen hair stylists, florists, dj’s, reps from the clothing companies, a fake snow making machine, noise makers, etc…. The total number of people on location for the shoot was around 50.

Luckily all the planning paid off and the shoot went very smoothly.

Below is the cover photo as well as one of the scenes depicting New Year’s Eve.

Long Beach Island Jersey Shore wedding photos

The Mallard Island Yacht Club in Manahawkin (just across the bridge from Long Beach Island) is a wonderful spot for a wedding. Actually it’s a photographer’s dream.

Long Island wedding photography

Setauket, New York is a lovely part of Long Island, especially in the fall.
Last Saturday I photographed Alison and Aaron’s wedding with fellow photographer Kate Leigh.
The rain held off long enough to capture some great photos with the fall leaves in the background.

New Jersey musician portrait

I had the opportunity to photograph musician Billy Hector before a recent performance.

I decided to light the portrait with one small video light. The narrow beam gives off a harsh light which seemed to work well for Billy’s portrait.

Since the portrait was for the Star Ledger’s “I am New Jersey” series it ran very large in the newspaper.

Be sure to see Hector if he is ever playing near you, he really makes that 30 year old guitar come alive.

Five reasons you should hire a photojournalist

I have never met Andrea James but I couldn’t agree more with her article entitled “Five reasons you should hire a photojournalist”
Here’s a link to the article on her website.

Here are the highlights:

Five reasons you should hire a photojournalist
You are: In charge of marketing for a corporation. Organizing an event. Planning a wedding. Starting a blog.

You want: Beautiful, memorable photos. Images that will grab the viewer’s attention, and hold it. A new head shot. A creative Christmas card.

You need: A photojournalist with daily newspaper experience.

Here’s why:

1. Photojournalists don’t make excuses — Things do go wrong, but a photojournalist who has worked for a daily newspaper is trained to do superior work, and quickly. She cannot come back to the office with no photo. The paper is coming out tomorrow, a photo is needed. She is used to operating under pressure.

2. Versatility — What I love about newspaper photographers is that they can do anything. My P-I colleagues often found themselves shooting a natural disaster one day (they all own rubber boots), a concert for the arts section the next day, and then a cake for the food section the next.

3. Consider your moment captured — How much would you pay to make sure that THE moment of your event is captured forever? This is what photojournalists are trained to do every day. At my own wedding, I knew that I didn’t have to worry about making sure our photographer (and friend) was capturing crucial moments. He was everywhere. When I saw the photos, I was delighted and saw new aspects of my own wedding that I had missed.

4. Photo journalists are problem solvers – Tell me, how do you make a photo of a technology company interesting? As a business reporter for nearly five years, I got to profile some really cool companies — but a lot of times, these companies performed a service that just wasn’t visually interesting. But I rarely worried about this — I knew we’d have a publishable photo for the newspaper because the photographer would think of something I never could have.

5. They’re the best of the best — Newspaper journalism is cutthroat. Thousands of people want to shoot photos for newspapers, particularly in a big city like Seattle. However, just a dozen actually get to do it. In short, they’ve been vetted.

An afternoon with Governor Corzine

I spent this afternoon photographing Governor Jon Corzine.
With the election polls very tight you can see the varied emotions on the Governor’s face.

Featured in News Photographer magazine

I’m honored to be featured in the new issue of News Photographer magazine.
The magazine is the trade publication for photojournalists and features the Star-Ledger’s recent “Chain of Life” series.
Seth Gitner writes a monthly column about multimedia and chose to highlight my video. He also discussed the Star-Ledger’s approach to video.
Thank’s Seth for a great article.

New Jersey jazz musician portrait

Sometimes the simplest lighting is the best.
Today I decided to take advantage of the beautiful late afternoon light for this portrait of jazz musician Santi DeBriano.
