John O’Boyle’s biography

I have the best job in the world.

As both a wedding photojournalist and staff photographer at the Star-Ledger I have documented the important moments in people’s lives for over 20 years.

I’m honored that bride and grooms have trusted me to capture the emotions of their wedding day.

Also, I have to thank the editors who have trusted me to photograph the World Series, the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, the US Open, Presidential inaugurations and Papal visits.

While the national awards and even a N.Y. Emmy nomination are very cool, I was thrilled to have one of my photos hang on the walls of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ok, it was only a photo contest and my photo was on display for only a year but I can still dream that I’m in the Hall of Fame, right?

While I prefer to stay behind the camera I have appeared as a television guest on New Jersey Network and was interviewed by Brian Williams for NBC News. I think it’s safe to say those have been the only times that I’ve worn makeup.

Michelle Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama visited the Maple Avenue School in Newark today. She visited the school as part of her Let’s Move! initiative to reduce childhood obesity.
As you can see the students were very excited to see the first lady.

A cruise around New York

I spent last night aboard the Cornucopia Majesty and Cornucopia Destiny during an open house.
The event was hosted by Camille Cerria of Smooth Sailing Celebrations.

Musician Tom DiCarlo suggested that we go up on the roof of his Union City apartment building for his portrait. It was an absolutely freezing cold day but we worked quickly and got a great shot.

Chess behind bars

Today I the opportunity to photograph a chess match in a very unique location, the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
Inside New Jersey’s maximum security prison a team of students from Princeton University University competed against a team of inmates.

Do 1 Thing

I am proud to join the volunteer team of world class photographers at Do 1 Thing. The group includes 23 Pulitzer Prize winners.

Do 1 Thing is a collaborative nationwide effort between artists and journalists that raises awareness of homeless teenagers and encourages individuals to do one thing of their choice to assist them on Valentine’s Day 2009.

I teamed up with Star-Ledger reporter Mark Mueller to create a series of interviews with elderly African American’s about the election of Barack Obama.

“When this young man Obama speaks, you feel the same feeling (as listening to Martin Luther King Jr.)…You feel a spiritualness about the whole thing.” Walter Gillins 79, of Newark

“I was filled with emotion almost to tears…I’m 89 – I might not even get to see the next election…but I have this.” Eddiemae Livingston 89 of Newark

Actor David Schramm

I spent some time photographing actor David Schramm. He is starring in “The Seafarer” at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick.

Twelve years ago Donald Arthur received the heart of a man who was shot in the head in a case of mistaken identity.
Today Donald Arthur is using his second chance at life to inspire people. “If you can’t affect somebody else’s life every 24 hours, it’s a wasted day.
The 64 year old is now half way to competing in marathons in every state in the country.
