Nationwide 3 million girls are now playing sports compared to 300,000 when Williams began her career.
That explosive growth did not come easy, in 1995 Williams filed a complaint with the federal Department of Education claiming that male athletes were getting preferential treatment.
But today was a day for celebration for the nation’s winningest field hockey coach.
