The new Prudential Center in downtown Newark has been controversial from the start.
Was building an arena the proper use for boatloads of tax dollars?
Would it really trigger continued redevelopment in downtown Newark?
After a series of high profile crimes in Newark, would people flock to the arena?
Most of those questions have yet to be answered but the building is now reality.
The Star-Ledger photo staff has been working on a number of multimedia projects in anticipation of the upcoming inaugural concert by Bon Jovi and the first Devils home game.
Two of the videos are posted below.
The first is a timelapse of the arena construction. For the past three years, photographers Patti Sapone, Jerry McCrea, Tony Kurdzuk and myself took turns climbing out on a ledge atop Newark’s tallest building to document the construction. Photo editor Bumper DeJesus combined the photos with music to complete the presentation.
For the second video I followed artist Tom Mosser as he spent six weeks creating a giant mural inside the arena.
